Journey In Satchidananda (14:59)
Shiva-Loka (14:39)
Africa (28:10)
Leo (21:40)
Review: In 1971, the harpist, pianist and ultimately multi-instrumentalist jazz musician Alice Coltrane performed at the Carnegie Hall for a special gala benefiting the Integral Yoga Institute. Backed by an all-star group of musicians, Coltrane delivered a captivating set which will now be available in its entirety on vinyl for the first time. The Carnegie Hall Concert, now out on Verve, documents one of the defining moments of Coltrane's career, taking place not long after the immediate positive reception to the release of her spotlit Journey In Satchidananda LP. The concert, which spans both recognisable and unique compositions by Coltrane, ultimately conveyed a uniquely Eastern edge lent to Western spiritual jazz, and came as the first dedicated concert to be themed after the lessons gleaned from recognition of the Hindu god and enlightened state, Satchidananda; it enlisted the aid of two of her closest friends in the circle she'd joined during a formative trip to India that year, Kumar Kramer and Tulsi Reynolds.

Review: Of all his many albums and live shows, A Love Supreme: Live In Seattle is often said by fans to be one Coltrane's greatest works. Until recently, this was a long lost performance from the iconic saxophonist. Recorded in 1964, it is only the second full live performance recording known after one from the Festival Mondial du Jazz Antibes in France from 1965. The quartet for the original recording of one was made up of McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones next to Coltrane himself, but this recording was boosted by Pharoah Sanders on tenor sax and Donald Garrett on second bass. It's a suite packed with spirit, power and soul.

Review: Blue World is an album that was never intended for release. It features music commissioned for a soundtrack for a Canadian film in 1964 and showcases a quartet that was at its very best. It's made up of short tracks and alternate takes of early Coltrane material and is utterly vibrant. Catchy little ditties like "Village Blues", stripped down numbers like the title track and the mostly-improvised "Traneing In" are all testament to the enduring brilliance of Coltrane, no matter the setting in which he was playing. The clarity of the recording and richness of the bass playing also add to the overall beauty of this record.

Greensleeves (16:06)
Africa (22:27)
Review: In August 1961, John Coltrane and his legendary Quintet, joined by visionary multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy, played the revered Village Gate in Greenwich Village, New York, not, at that time, as established as it would soon become. This special new double album features over an hour and a half of music that has never before been heard, including well-known Coltrane classics such as 'My Favorite Things' and 'Greensleeves' as well as the only known non-studio recording of Coltrane's 'Africa' from his Africa/Bass album. The record then marks a historic moment in Coltrane's career.

Review: In the reams of great John Coltrane recordings, this album surely stands of one of the true gems. Originally released in 1963, this collaboration with legendary baritone singer Johnny Hartman captures Coltrane at his mellow best. Alongside the headliners, the line-up on this album also features McCoy Turner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums and Jimmy Garrison on bass, and the result is an understated, sumptuous listen to lose yourself in. Sentimental and melancholic in all the best ways, this is sensitive musicianship at its finest.

Review: Released on Impulse! Records in 1966, this collection by John Lee Hooker offers a mix of both new compositions and reworkings of tunes that Hooker had previously recorded. Including a cover of Barrett Strong's 1959 Motown hit 'Money (That's What I Want)' - following in the musical footsteps of The Beatles, who recorded it three years earlier - this vindictively titled record is a fitting fusion of grievous Delta and raw blues; filled with schadenfreude and passion; transience and regret; vitality and poise; it's some of the best John Lee Hooker material you're likely to come across in this decade.

Review: Blue Note's Tone Poet series continues to revisit some of the label's most seminal releases and give them a new spit and polish before cutting them to virgin wax. This time out it is the Charles Mingus classic Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus from 1964. The American composer and bassist collaborated with arranger and orchestrator Bob Hammer to score this one, which is all about music for a large ensemble of brass and saxophones. The eight tracks range from empty and pensive to stirring and optimistic. Though none of the tunes were new for this session, the way they are played brings plenty of freshness to each.

Review: Sonny Rollins' 'Alfie' soundtrack, originally released in 1966, is an enthralling example of the saxophonist's ability to weave narratives through his music, his incisive and energetic playing breathing life into the film's themes of love, loss and the complexities of human relationships. The iconic 'Alfie's Theme' and its variations are instantly recognisable, their melancholic beauty capturing the film's emotional core. But the album also features hidden gems like the regret-tinged 'He's Younger Than You Are' and the sensually relaxed 'On Impulse', showcasing Rollins' versatility and emotional range.

Review: The latest title in Impulse's 180-gram audiophile reissue series is the 1969 Pharoah Sanders classic Karma. The record has been newly mastered by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound from the original analogue tapes and comes in a deluxe gatefold jacket. The album was the tenor sax master's third record for the label and has since taken on the mantle of being a milestone in the spiritual jazz movement. The A-side is taken up by one track that in particular defines that sound, while the flipside builds on the mood with 'Light of Love' and 'Colors.'

Review: A saxophonist at the pinnacle of his game, Shabaka Hutchings presents 'Afrikan Culture, on which he explores the rich musical traditions of the African continent and combines them with contemporary, self-affirming themes. Remarkably for how well-touted his name is, this is Hutchings' first ever solo LP, bringing it to the masses under the name Shabaka (following on the smash success of Sons Of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming). It's a stunning, existential album which not only pays tribute to the Afrofuturist greats who precede him, but which, of course, looks squarely into the eyes of Afroftuture that will come after him.

Review: In 2016 saxophonist and clarinetist Shabaka Hutchings established the "Ancestors" collective of South African musicians to perform live and record debut album "Wisdom Of Elders", a journey into the spiritual and avant-garde side of jazz inspired in part by the struggles of previous generations of black musicians. Four years on, the Sons Of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming member has reassembled the collective for album number two, "We Are Sent Here By History". It treads similar musical territory to its similarly essential predecessor, with Hutchings and his South African collaborators presenting tracks that, in his words, "meditate on the fact of our coming extinction as a species". While the music is nowhere near as doom-laden and miserable as that may suggest - it's very entertaining, thoughtful and spiritually involved - as albums go "We Are Sent Here By History" is certainly hard hitting.

Review: Continuing to affirm the harp's place within the annals of jazz, Brandee Younger returns with her second album and pays tribute to one of her forebears, the mighty Dorothy Ashby. Mixing her own original pieces with reinterpretations of Ashby's work, Younger infuses her playing with the cultural context of a life raised on hip-hop, rock and pop. It's a subtle amalgamation which guides the rhythm and intonation of her playing, but the results are exquisite and highly individual, placing Younger in the upper echelons of harpists from any era you care to mention.

Review: Spring has sprung into something resembling summer, and perhaps the best record through which to celebrate this transition is Brandee Younger's latest, Gadabout Season. The title - sparked by a word-of-the-day email on tour with longtime collaborators Rashaan Carter and Allan Mednard (gadabout meaning "someone who roves about aimlessly seeking amusemnt") - came to represent the Younger trio's mission to seek spontaneous lightness through movement and music. Writing from a cabin in upstate New York, and later recorded in her Harlem apartment, Younger embraced a slow, intentional process, fine-planing a canny compositional set informed by ancestral, influential sottos of jazz, hip-hop, classical and soul; all are heard to whisper in Younger's ear as she rides each song. It's the first major body of work made almost entirely on her own, and crucially, contains pieces crafted using Alice Coltrane's restored harp, now appropriately left in her care.
